Keast, John

Posted

As we rejoice in the life of John Keast, we announce that he died peacefully on Wednesday, June 22 at the Mauno Kaihla Koti, Ontario Finnish Resthome in Sault Ste. Marie. He was in his 89th year. John was surrounded by the love of his family and friends at the time of his death, and was comforted and cherished by his beloved and loving wife, Jean Hershey.

John was the proud and loving father of Cathy Poole, her husband Brian, and the late Rod Keast. He was the cherished grandfather of Patrick and Andrew Meuser, and Christie Keast Kay and Robert Keast; very special uncle of Vanessa Oltmann, and David, Gabrielle and Laura Hershey; and great uncle of Rowan and Maegan Semos and Oliver Hershey; brother-in-law of Harriet and John Hershey and special friend of Jean Keast.

John's passion for life and his special relationship with the north land touched and inspired many through his dedication to his community. Among his involvements, he was a founding member of the Four and Friends Art Show, a working member of the Bruce Mines Chamber of Commerce, a former director of the Art Gallery of Algoma, Landscape Painting Teacher and Mentor, Youth Education Chairman for Bruce Mines Royal Canadian Legion, and a director for
the Rydal Bank Historical Society.

He was a veteran of World War II and a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 211.

John was the recipient of the "Canada 125 Medal" in recognition for his commitment to community, and was honoured as Citizen of the Year for both Plummer Additional Township and the town of Bruce Mines.

John's oil paintings were an expression of the land he loved and explored. Canoeing, hiking and world travel gave him a special perspective on the rugged northern landscape. Through his paintings, he was able to connect with many, and to share his vision, enthusiasm and loving nature.

John and Jean would like to thank those who guided them along their recent journey together, and in particular the Alzheimer's Society and the Day Away Program of the F. J. Davey Home who helped them find their way and helped them treasure the humour of some of life's more serious moments. The support of Senior's Mental Health, the Red Cross and Community Care Access is acknowledged for assisting John in remaining in his beloved Rydal Bank home until March. The loving support of dear friends and family is beyond words to express. And finally, special appreciation is extended to the caring staff of the Mauno Kahli Koti who helped and supported both John and Jean during John's final days as he was able to die with love and dignity.

John touched the lives of many in various areas of the community. Donations to the charity which best represents your connection with John would be appreciated by the family with special consideration being given to the Rydal Bank Historical Society, the Bruce Mines Legion, the Ontario Finnish Resthome Association Foundation, and the Alzheimer's Society.

Cremation has taken place.

Friends may call at the Rydal Bank Hall on Thursday, June 30 from 10am until the time of a Legion Service at 12 noon.
