It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Gary has had his final walk in the woods, painted his last landscape, watched his last movie, picked his final berries, thrown his last curling rock, strummed his last song on the guitar/ukulele, split his last log, built his last fire, eaten his last piece of cake and custard-filled donut, and built his last snow cave/cardboard fort. He was a man of great integrity, patience and curiosity who enjoyed a simple life and found joy in its simple pleasures.
Loved son of Earl and Margaret Huntley (predeceased). Devoted and patient husband of 53 years to Jeanne. Adoring and proud father of Jennifer Keenan (Matthew). Most cherished grandfather/Dadap and best friend to Benjamin. Brother to Richard Huntley (Joy) of Woodville, Ontario. Brother-in-law to Beverley Gingras of Dry Creek, Tennessee, Pauline Lynde (Bryce) of Orono, Ontario, Rebecca Metcalfe (Jim) of Powassan, Ontario, and Judy Molica (Tom) of Dunsford, Ontario. Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Following his retirement from the Great Lakes Forest Research Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, he spent many hours volunteering in the community at organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Shadows of the Mind Film Festival, and Algoma International Films. He was infinitely inquisitive and creative and was always learning something new, from art, to languages, to music, and construction. He could fix anything, build anything, tell the best stories, and make anything fun. The only thing he couldn't do was say no to Ben.
He devoted his life to caring for his family, doing anything and everything for them, with infinite patience and strength. His greatest peace was found in nature, especially at his property on Basswood Lake, where he could spend days moving dirt around, excavating rocks, and being among the trees.
As per Gary's wishes for privacy, there will not be a service or reception. He will be laid to rest in the spring, returning to Basswood Lake and his beloved woods. In his memory, be kind, caring and thoughtful, try to find humour in every situation, take a walk in the woods or plant a tree. Memorial contributions payable by cheque or online to the Alzheimer's Society or to Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
