Passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

Beloved mother of Susan Spurway (William), Leila Comeau (Eugene) and Robert Hiiemaa (Kimi). Cherished grandma, aiti and lana of Keenan (Melissa), Jared, Leeve (Paula), Kyrsti (Josh), Kaarle (Riley), Stevan (Mik) and Olivia (Devin). Loving great-grandmother of Keija, Chase, Hudson, Everlee, Myrah and Miika. Predeceased by her parents Oskar William and Saima Selina Makynen, her husband Endel Hiiemaa and her siblings Raakel, Eino, Marja, Aleksi, Muisto, Taisto, Marjatta and 4 others. She will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews in Finland, Estonia, Canada and the United States.

Our mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend left an indelible mark on those whom had entered her life. 'Sisu' described her best with a mixture of nurturing kindness. Her adventure coming to Canada on her own as a teenager unable to speak english was just the beginning. Her hard work was dedication was evident in all she did in life. She was 'independent' and she would let you know it. She may have been a tiny woman; but she worked like a man. She was the first female head caretaker for Algoma District School Board.

This fine woman was struck by dementia which slowly robbed her from her active life. She maintained her storytelling about the love of her parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and husband for some time. Her one story which all have heard was "Did you know I was a triplet and I was the only girl to survive? That is why I am strong." As time progressed, we were comforted by the care at Extendicare Mapleview for almost 7 years.

The family of Lilja Tyyni Hiiemaa would like to recognize all of the staff of Tunnel Lake for their compassionate care of our precious matriarch. We as a family were confident in the professional care provided by everyone, from Doctors, RNs, RPNs and PSWs. All of you were an important part of her extended family. Kittos! Extensions of various services from administrative, laundry, dieticians, foot care, hairdresser, food services, cleaning staff and volunteers were an intricate part of providing a safe and healthy environment. Thank you.

Friends and family are invited to visit at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East 705-759-2522) on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 5 pm to 6:45 pm with a service to follow at 7 pm, officiated by Mrs. Helen Smith. Memorial contributions payable online or by cheque may be made to a charity of your choice in Lilja's honour.
