Peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the age of 85.  Beloved husband and best friend of Mary-Lou (Smith) for 62 years.  Devoted and loving father of Janice Ramsay (Gord) and Greg Harten (Velvet).  Deeply beloved grandpa to Ian Ramsay (Sarah), Chris Ramsay (Deanna), Eric Ramsay (Jessica), Mark Ramsay, Kelseigh Harten and Aryanna Harten.  Will be missed by his great grandchildren Emma Ramsay, Everett Ramsay and Cali Ramsay including many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.  Brother to Clarence Harten (Diana), Nancy Littleton (Don), Wynne McHardy (Duncan), Florence Hawdon (late Bill), Noreen Townson (late George and Cy) and June Gordon (late Mel).  Brother-in-law to Jean Hunter (late Jack), and the late Ivan Smith.  Predeceased by his parents Helen and Robert Harten.  Born and raised on St. Joseph’s Island, where he grew up on the family farm.  He will always be known as the person who would do anything for anyone, especially for his family.  He worked very hard but could always find time for his children and grandchildren.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion on St. Joseph’s Island and was an avid outdoorsman, spending several hours on the fishing boat and in the bush-lot.  These times will always be cherished as this is when he gave his grandchildren time and life lessons that grandpa’s can only give, such as where the best place to fish was, how to hold a BB gun and where to find grandma’s baking.  He was a stubborn, caring, devoted and strong-willed man.  It is said that the bravest, sweetest and most loved people are given the greatest challenges in life.  Grandpa you fought like no other, you are our soldier and do not ever think that you were defeated.  You showed us how to fight while keeping a smile on your face whenever life got hard.  The greatest thing that you have taught us is what the definition of family is and what unconditional love feels like.  Although you may be gone, you will never be forgotten.  You will always have your spot at the head of the table.  Friends and family are invited to visit at ArthurFuneral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. – 705-759-2522) on Monday, July 2, 2018 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.  Memorial service to follow at 3 pm.  The Venerable Hugh Hamilton officiating.  Interment at Richards Landing Cemetery.  Memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.  Thank you to Dr. Beduhn, Dr. Aziz, and the oncology unit at the Sault Area Hospital.  Special thank you to Amy at Bayshore for your compassion, care and support shown to Gerald and our family.
