HAIGHT, Wilfred (Bill)

Posted

As promised, Bill has gone to join his loving wife and companion, Betty, on Thursday, December 23, 2004. Maintaining his sense of humour, wit and unforgettable smile to the end. He will be sadly missed by daughter, Nancy Penrose (Andy) and son Brad (Vicki). Very proud Papa to Emily. Predeceased by his parents, Walter & Sarah (Smith) Haight and sister, Glenda Harten (Elgin). Brother of Donna Hadden (late George) & Lyle (Phyllis). Special nephew of Marie & Laurence Rains, Lois Jean & Harold See and the late Ray & Verna Vallee. Favourite “Uncle Billy” to many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his good friend, fishing buddy and brother-in-law, Harold Brown. His four-legged devoted friend Tessie, who lay right by his side until after his passing, will miss their car rides, walks and playing ball. Along with Fred Kent & the Northernairs, Bill, “The Singing Islander”, shared his gift of song from St. Joseph Island to Nashville. In later years, he and the Border Riders continued to entertain country fans throughout Algoma and Northern Michigan. Inducted into Northern Ontario Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992, he was humbled by this honour and hoped that the people of Sault Ste. Marie would continue to appreciate the traditions of country music and the enjoyment that it brings. It was evident he had made many friends throughout his years as an entertainer, auctioneer and neighbour by the number of visitors, cards, letters and phone calls he received during his illness and hospital stays. Friends may call at the Free Methodist Church, St. Joseph Island on Thursday, December 30, 2004 from 11 am until time of funeral service at 1 pm. Rev. John Hyndman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Northern Ontario Country Music Hall of Fame, SAH Cancer Clinic, Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society or a charity of your choice. (Arrangements entrusted to the Barton & Kiteley Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 759-2114).
