GOODMURPHY, Floyd Manley

Floyd Goodmurphy Pic

The sun has set on another life well lived.  The family of Floyd Manley Goodmurphy announces his death on Saturday, August 13th, 2022 at the Thessalon Hospital at the age of 95.  Floyd was born on April 1st, 1927 on Cockburn Island and lived there until the age of 8 when his family packed all of their belongings onto a horse-drawn sled and traveled across the frozen waters of Lake Huron to settle on a farm in Dayton. He married Doris King on November 28th, 1958 and they returned to the homestead until building the new home in Sowerby in 1966 where they raised their family. Floyd operated his own heavy equipment business, worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources, then became Road Superintendent for Thessalon Township before retiring in 1992 at the age of 65.  Through all these years, Floyd took great pride in providing a continuous supply of fresh produce for his family (and friends and neighbours too!) and was often teased for his flawlessly straight rows and meticulous weeding.  Floyd’s other passion was playing cards.  He was always ready for a game of poker, cribbage or the dollar game.  Even in his final days, as his mind relived times gone by, he could be heard counting his hand.  His grandchildren will always vie for his lucky horseshoe, hoping to win even close to as many games as Grandpa.  Floyd also had a special gift for witching wells and would get calls from miles away. He never failed to locate where the water was or how far down the drill needed to go.  The family will always cherish many memories from times spent at the camp he built on Big Basswood.

Born to the late Albert and Ethel Goodmurphy, Floyd is survived by his wife, Doris (King), his children, Lisa (J.A. Prestage), Greg (Diane), Leanne (Tim Lester) and Linda Cecutti (Michael) and his precious grandchildren, Katie & Emma Prestage, Patrick & Nathan Goodmurphy, Taylor Lester and Sophia & Livia Cecutti.  He took pride in their accomplishments and never passed up an opportunity to watch their theatre performances, piano recitals or hockey games.  Much loved brother of Manford, Muriel Dixon, Leonard (Marg), Bob (Sandra), Ellen Snider (Doug) and sister-in-law Pat.  Predeceased by Garnet, Earl, Vera Mitchell, Howard, Myrtle Vincent, Cecil, Arden and Hazel Sullivan.  Dear brother-in-law of Jack King (Barbara), Donna Sherlock, Gordon King and Shirley Nicholson.  Predeceased by Alice Thompson, Edith Martin, George King, Orville King, Leonard King, Lloyd King, Earl King and Ronald King.  Will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews, who his door was always open to.  Floyd was a long-time member of the Dyment Lodge 442 of Thessalon.

The family would like to thank the staff at Sault Area Hospital, North Shore Health Network - Blind River and Thessalon Sites, Golden Birches and Algoma Manor for their care over the past few months.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Beggs Funeral Home on Friday, September 9, 2022 from 6 pm to 9 pm.  Funeral on Saturday, September 10, 2022 beginning at 11 am at Thessalon United Church.  Interment at Maple Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Floyd’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice.
