At the Palliative Care Unit, Sault Area Hospital June 1, 2007 after 97 spirited years. She was an outstanding teacher of thousands of Sault area elementary students; a leader, generous with her time, to her community and church. Ahead of her times in matters of education, consumer rights and the environment. A resident of Pim Hill for 70 years and most recently the Collegiate Heights community. Happy wife of Wilfred for 59 years. Mother to Dee Patterson and Bruce. Iola was a very proud Grandma to her four grandsons, Chris and David (Jennifer) Patterson and Micheal (Sarah) and Dana Fountain. Descended from the pioneers of Sylvan Valley through the Becking and Haldenby families, she will return there for burial on Monday, June 4th. The funeral service will be held at St. Andrews United Church, Monday June 4, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception following. Mrs. Janet Norman officiating. Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home Sunday, June 3 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Survived by brother Jim Haldenby and sisters Evelyn Brodie and Stella Brodie. Predeceased by brother Fred. A life well lived with a swift, peaceful passage. Though she loved flowers, memorial donations in her memory to the New Sault Area Hospital Fund or St. Andrew’s United Church would be appreciated by her family.
