This is a celebration of life and more importantly, a celebration of a truly amazing love story. Their story began with the Liberation of Holland in 1945. Russell being a proud Canadian soldier joined his fellow troops in Rotterdam, Holland to help bring peace and liberate the war-torn city during WWII. One day while on duty, Russell spotted a beautiful lady named Adrianna Maria Elizabeth (Nan) whom he dreamed would one day become his wife. Six weeks later they were engaged and married 8 months later. Nan left her beloved family in Holland and moved to Canada. Russell, who was still on duty in Holland, joined Nan later in Sault Ste. Marie. They then moved to Kingston, where Russell earned his Metallurgical Engineering Degree from Queen’s University. Their first son was born in Kingston and after Russell obtained his degree, Russell, Nan and their son Geoffrey returned to Sault Ste. Marie. As years went by, Russell and Nan had a second son Gary. Both Russ and Nan were so very proud of their two sons. As time went by, they purchased a new home and Russell and Nan quickly made it the home of their dreams. Russell’s passions were his family relationships, his joy of teaching and sharing his knowledge of the construction and engineering disciplines, and restoring and driving his classic antique car. Russell also loved to tell stories of his childhood, WWII and the unique courtship of his wife and soul mate Nan. Russell passed away peacefully in his 95th year while being comforted by family at the Sault Area Hospital on Saturday, May 5, 2018. May 5th is a special day for the citizens of Holland who celebrate this day as Liberation Day. Russell was the cherished husband and best friend of 72 years to the late Nan Disano (nee Renirie). Loving son of the late Guilio and late Carmella Disano. Adored son in-law of the late John and late Mickey Renirie. Cherished father to Geoffrey and Gary (Gail) Disano. Brother of the late Rose (late Tommy) Bosbous, Harold (late Bernadette) Disano, Gerry (late Helen) Disano, and the late Irene (late Ralph) Hautanen. Adored brother in-law of Yvonne (Ronnie) Durocher to whom Russell was considered as more than just a brother in-law. Brother in-law of the late Albert (late Eus) Renirie. Loving grandfather of Jason (Brittni) Disano, Ryan (Lisa) Disano and Tricia (Dan) Craddock. Great grandfather of Zoe Mercier-Disano, Raelle, Jack and Henry Disano and Lauren and Ava Craddock. Uncle to 20 nieces and nephews. Special uncle to Bonnie Smith, Robert Disano, Liana (John) Gangasingh and Elissa (Craig) Chapman. Russell was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 25. Russell touched the hearts of many and will truly be missed and always respected by those who knew him and his hearty laughter. A special thank you to the emergency unit and critical care unit 3C doctors and staff of the Sault Area Hospital for their compassionate and dignified care of Russell. At the family’s request, a private family service has already been held. Donations to the Canadian Heart & Stroke Fund or the Sault Area Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
