Posted

Died peacefully Sunday, September 9th, 2007 in Ottawa in the care of her family. She leaves behind her adoring and loyal husband, Bill, her loving children Simon (Suzanne), Michael (Tammy) and Helen (Jim), her grandchildren Jonathan, Hannah, Sarah, Christopher, Evan, Rhiannon and Jenny, as well as Suzanne’s children Kim, Andrea and Melanie. Born and raised in Mountain Ash, Wales, Eira studied religion, music and teaching at St. Gabriel’s College, London University graduating in 1947. Eira and Bill were married at the Bethaniel Chapel in Mountain Ash. Eira held teaching positions in primary schools throughout northern England as they followed Bill’s engineering career. With the arrival of her children, Eira gave her full attention to their upbringing. She was a devoted, creative and animated mum. With the family’s move to Sault Ste. Marie, Eira fell in love with the Lake Superior shoreline. She continued her teaching career while earning an Honours degree in History at Algoma University. She taught at Central, Manitou Park and Alex Muir Elementary Schools where she was active in both primary education and music. Following her retirement in 1987, Eira and Bill enjoyed the following years visiting family and travelling extensively. As her extended families grew, Eira’s love of children shone through: sharing tales, songs and reminiscences with the family she loved so dearly. Whether making wine, taking continuing education courses, lunching, or off on excursions, Eira and her dear friends delighted in each other’s company. Despite the distance, Eira also stayed close with friends and family in England and Wales. Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Friday, September 14, 2007 from 11 am until time of the memorial service at 1 pm. Rev. Bruce McLeish officiating. Private interment Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the SAH foundation or a children’s charity of your choice would be appreciated.
