Peacefully passed away at the Sault Area Hospital with her family by her side on Monday, August 24, 2020 at the age of 95. Beloved wife of the late Carmine Briglio.  Loving mother of Edward (Carol), Isabella DeLuca (Aldo), Gino (Pam) of Sault, Michigan, Tony (Christie), Peter (Nancy) of Toronto and Rico (Juli).

Sister of the late Gabriele Caputo (late Emma), late Luisa Falsetto (late Emilio) of Ottawa and Elvira Caputo.  Sister-in-law of late Caterina Parisi (late Luigi), late Irma Pulice of France (late Giuseppe), late Salvatore (Rosina), late Antonia Colosimo (late Mario), late Luigi (late Francesca) of Brooklyn, New York, late Giuseppe (Emilia) of Ottawa and Maria Cuglietta (late Giovanni).

Maria’s journey started in the little town of Cleto, Italy. Her life was rooted in the mountains and in the fresh water from the natural springs. She loved to tell stories from the old country – A family favourite was when she would carry water from the springs back to her home on top of her head.

She crossed the ocean with three children and a suitcase in pursuit for a better life for her family. When she landed in Sault Ste. Marie, she forged through, providing for her family and many more. Along with her late husband, Carmine, they built a life in Canada together, but, never forgot their Italian heritage. Maria’s plot of land on Parliament Street can be described as “Little Italy”. Her garden produced life and fed the belly’s of her 6 children.

Maria was very proud to hold the title of Nana and Great Nana to all her “Le bellezze di nana’s” - Stephen (Corinna), David (Paul), Andrea, Laura, Paul, Jason (Hilary), Amanda, Alexandria (Andrew), Sara (Luke), Anthony, Rachel, Tiana (Matt), Alysha (David). Great grandchildren Ava, Ella, Cohen, Nolan, Dean, Jacob and Lincoln.

Nana was a caregiver to all and in her final years on this earth had many wonderful caregivers that showed her the utmost respect and kindness that she showed so many: Nurses Jennifer Murray and Kim of Bayshore, the many kind and caring PSW’s from Care Partners, and CCAC, and the many years of care from Dr. Ianni, Dr. Vance and Dr. Shafiee.

The family cannot thank Harvey Kennedy enough, her favourite neighbour and friend, who provided her with support and would check in on her.

Her love and dedication to God and family was witnessed with her faith and hours of prayer for her late and living family.

The family of Maria would like to express their thanks to the countless responses from Sault Paramedics over the years, and to Emergency Physicians Dr. Bodnar and Dr. White, and the Emergency Nurses Amanda, Courtney, Corey and Mike who gave us the priceless gift of time. You all gave our Nana the utmost dignity and respect that she so deserved on her final day and for that we cannot thank you enough.
