It is with the heaviest of hearts that we the family announce the passing of Ed after a long fought and courageous battle on Thursday, November 30, 2017 in his 79th year. Loving and dedicated husband of Joanne for 56 years. A very treasured, honoured, adored and loving father of Roberta Hackett and Kim Whitmell (special son-in-law Ed). A very special dedicated and doting Papa of Nicholas Whitmell and Cameron Hackett. Son of the late Joseph and Annie Bernard. Son-in-law of the late Ermino and Mary Bianchi. Brother of the late Pauline Jarvis (late Jim), the late Lloyd Bernard (late Bette), the late Bill Bernard (Nancy), Reg Bernard (Gayle) and Stan Bernard (Cindy). Brother-in-law of the late Tony Bianchi (Dorothy) and many nieces, nephews (the late Bill Bernard Jr.).Ed gave and served decades working for Bell Canada. Ed had a passion for football in his school years. He was a true athlete. Ed was given two scholarships for his football. One with Notre Dame and Michigan State University. He also had a talent for drawing, he was an artist and loved to draw cartoons for the newspaper and drawings for his family and friends. Ed played a mean harmonica at our campfires every summer. Ed loved his hockey. He was the trainer for the Algoma Contractors for decades Ed received an award from the Sault Major Hockey Association proudly presenting him with “The Longevity Award” for the longest active coaching-team in the history of the Association. Every now and then Ed always had to bring home a dog that he just had to rescue. He had a huge soft spot for dogs and animals. Friends may visit at the Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kitlely Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. 705-759-2522) on Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm. Funeral service in the chapel at 1 pm. Memorial contributions to the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society, SPCA, Northern Critters or TAGG would be appreciated.
