Pre-season look at York United FC of the Canadian Premier League

TORONTO — A look at York United FC, an original member of the Canadian Premier League:

ORIGINS: York began life in the CPL as York 9 FC. The franchise’s original name came from the nine municipalities that make up the York region north of Toronto: Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and Whitchurch-Stouffville. The club was rebranded as York United FC in December 2020.

CURRENT OWNERS: Game Plan Sports Group, led by Mexican brothers Eduardo, Miguel and Ricardo Pasquel. They bought the club in November.

INITIAL SALE: Canadian Soccer Business, which shares the same ownership group as the CPL, bought the franchise in April 2023 from the Baldassarra family. The Baldassarras were part of the original ownership group and became sole owner in 2021.

HOME: The team currently plays at York Lions Stadium, on the campus of York University.

LAST SEASON: York finished fifth in the eight-team league at 11-12-5, losing 1-0 to Pacific FC in the post-season play-in round.
