The National Newspaper Awards have named the finalists for its annual journalism honours and given four nominations to The Canadian Press.
The national newswire agency received the nominations in various photography categories.
In the general news photo category, Nathan Denette was nominated for a shot of a COVID-19 patient gasping for air as he received medical attention in an intensive-care unit.
Frank Gunn received a nomination in the same category for capturing the moment when Michael Kovrig was reunited on a tarmac with his wife after being held captive in China for nearly three years.
Chris Young was among the breaking news photo nominees for an image of police removing protesters as they cleared a homeless persons' encampment in downtown Toronto.
In the feature photo category, Jason Franson was nominated for a photograph of a man relaxing in cool water at Edmonton city hall as temperatures hit 37 C.
This year's nominations celebrate 66 finalists from 19 news organizations in 22 categories.
The Globe and Mail led with 21 nominations across 16 categories, while La Presse received nine and the Toronto Star eight, plus an additional nod shared with the Halifax Chronicle Herald and another with parent company Torstar and the National Observer.
The Winnipeg Free Press tied with CP's four nominations.
Three small news organizations based in Western Canada received their first nominations.
Evan Buhler at RMO Today, the web portal of the Rocky Mountain Outlook weekly newspaper in Canmore, Alta., received nominations for feature photo and local reporting for a four-part series on fatal skiing accidents in the Rockies. Buhler is CP's 2021 Tom Hanson Award winner.
Glacier Media and the Fraser Valley Current also picked up nominations.
The winners will be announced during a webcast on May 6.
