MONTREAL — The Crown has laid a second-degree murder charge against a Montreal man whose girlfriend died following an alleged assault last weekend.

The upgraded charges against Brandon McIntyre came during a brief court appearance today in Montreal in connection with the slaying of Rebekah Harry, 29.

McIntyre, 32, had initially been charged with aggravated assault and breaching conditions, but Harry died in hospital Tuesday after spending several days in critical condition in a coma.

McIntyre was also charged today with assaulting another woman on the same date, and Montreal police say the events are related.

Victims' advocates in Quebec have raised the alarm about a spate of killings linked to domestic violence this year.

Harry is at least the seventh woman to be killed in an alleged domestic violence case in the province since the beginning of 2021.
