3rd Annual Eat Algoma Local Food Festival takes place this Saturday in Desbarats

The 3rd Annual Eat Algoma Local Food Festival is only days away and will be serving up something for everyone. Local restaurants will be serving a “Farm to Fork” style paring, creating delicious bite sized appetizers made entirely of food sourced from the Algoma region.

This year’s event will be held at the Johnson Township Community Centre (Desbarats Arena) in Desbarats, Ontario on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 12 to 5 p.m. Eat Algoma is organized by Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN), a division of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre.

All activities and entertainment are free, although tickets must be purchased to sample special dishes created just for Eat Algoma. This year’s tasting menu includes:

Pulled pork and bison sliders served by Fred Falls Catering, meat sourced from Valleyfield Farm and Grand North Bison
Vegetable harvest soup in a cucumber cup served by Shabby Motley, sourced from Valleyfield Farm
Local fish soup served by Café Natüra, sourced from Agawa Fishery and Jardin Farm
Pumpkin seed brownie served by Cordelia Plant-Based Meals
Special picnic style lunch box dishes for kids served by Red Door Catering
Fairtrade and organically grown coffee from family owned St. Joseph Island Coffee Roasters

All Eat Algoma attendees, including those who do not purchase a ticket, will have access to the following free activities:

Interactive and entertaining live cooking demo by Birgit Kroll of Sault Personal Fit Meal Catering, inviting kids to help prepare a fall harvest soup
Live musical performances from local talent, including The Wildman Sisters, and The Frantic Young
Free ice cream samples from Lock City Dairy
Family friendly events and kids activities in partnership with local community groups, including free face painting from 12 – 2pm; meet and greet with Freggie, the official mascot of all things fruit and veggie; community gardening tips; food preparation; coloring contest; scavenger hunt and more!

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children aged 3 to 12. Tickets can be purchased at any Scotiabank location in Sault Ste. Marie and Blind River.

Scotiabank is a proud sponsor of Eat Algoma, and will generously match sales for all tickets sold at Scotiabank locations leading up to the event, donating the money to RAIN, Eat Algoma’s host organization. Ticket holders will also be entered in a door prize for a locally sourced prize package.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the event for those who are unable to purchase a ticket in advance; however, we ask those who plan to attend but cannot purchase a ticket in advance to fill out a brief RSVP form here, indicating number of guests so that our vendors and chefs can prepare accordingly to reduce food waste and ensure enough dishes are available.

Johnsons Farmers’ Market will be operating as usual under the pavilion, and the annual Sylvan Circle’s Artist and Artisan Tour will also be taking place at the Johnson Township Community Centre and surrounding area. Eat Algoma will be held indoors with ample outdoor parking available.
