United Steelworkers present cheques to local charities

Money were donated to Soup Kitchen, St. Vincent Place, Christmas Cheer, and others

Members of the United Steelworkers were pleased to present cheques to the Soup Kitchen ($4,000) and St. Vincent Place ($1,000) on behalf of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund.

USW Local 8748 presented the Soup Kitchen with an additional $1,000 cheque.  Local 8748 also donated $1,600 to Christmas Cheer and $1,000 to Women in Crisis.

The USW Local 2251 membership donated $1,500 to the Soup Kitchen and St. Vincent Place, along with ARCH and Pauline’s Place. The membership also donated $55,600 to the Sault Area Hospital to purchase two bi-pap machines for the ICE and ER departments.  In addition, $14,000 will be spent on 200 Personal Essential Bags and on dessert trays for active and retired members in area nursing homes, the hospital and ARCH.

USW Local 2724 presented cheques for $2,000 to both the Soup Kitchen and St. Vincent Place. Additional $2,000 donations were made to Pauline’s Place, the Salvation Army, Sault Star Santa Fund and Women in Crisis.  ARCH has already received a donation of $45,200 towards its upgrades and renovations.  The Local also donated $40,762 for an infant warmer and $16,950 for the YMCA renovations.

“During the Christmas Season, a large number of Sault Ste. Marie residents find they need a little extra help, especially with the current rising costs. This is why the Steelworkers are committed to helping others in our community during the holidays.”, stated Hans De Feyter, president of USW Local 9548.  

The membership donated $1,000 each to the Soup Kitchen, Women in Crisis, ARCH for Christmas Cheer, Making a Difference for Christmas Cheer, St. Vincent’s Place and Pauline’s Place.  The Centre for Social Justice and Good Works will receive $500.
