Union Gas is providing a $2,000 grant to the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA), for signage upgrades at Fort Creek Conservation Area, to improve access and safety for visitors.

Don Van Daele, Union Gas utility service manager, presented the cheque to SSMRCA Board chair, Marchy Bruni at Fort Creek Conservation Area today.

SSMRCA owns and maintains several conservation areas such as Mark’s Bay, Fort Creek, Hiawatha Highlands and Shore Ridges.

Fort Creek Conservation Area covers approximately 77 hectors and is situated in the middle of Sault Ste. Marie creating a sense of tranquility in the heart of the city and is a small example of the beautiful Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest and wetlands.

The improved signage will improve accessibility and increase safety for visitors.

“At Union Gas, a relentless commitment to safety and environmental conservation are core company values,” said Van Daele.  “We’re very pleased to support Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority’s signage initiative, which aligns so closely with our values and will improve recreational opportunities at local Conservation areas like Fort Creek.”

“We appreciate the efforts of Union Gas in assisting the Conservation Authority in achieving its goals of increased public participation and environmental education in the community,” said Rhonda Bateman, SSMRCA general manager. “New signage for Fort Creek is a great upgrade to one of the best publicly accessible natural spaces in Sault Ste. Marie.”
