Grade 1 students at École Saint-Joseph (Wawa) had quite an experience when their teacher Ms. Vanessa Berthiaume-Moynihan recently transformed their classroom into an operating room. To make this special event possible, community partners donated materials such as pill containers, isolation gowns and room dividers.

During this medical theme day, the students completed literacy and numeracy activities.

The first activity required the students to find the vocabulary of body parts that had been placed in the patient's stomach (containing red spaghetti) and then place the body parts in the correct place on the patient.

In the second activity, students had to solve equivalent equations in order to find the failed organ.

As part of the third challenge, each student received a container with mixed letters. The students had to put the pills in the proper sequence in order to discover a word. Towards the end of the morning, the students solved double-digit additions and obtained the bandage required when they obtained the right amount.

In the afternoon, an X-ray centre was organized allowing the students to make an artistic creation of an X-ray of their arm. The students loved this busy day that allowed them to become young surgeons!
