The Sault College Public Relations and Event Management program have partnered with the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District to help students acquire experience and help a local non-profit organization.

The PEM students have been able to conduct a focus group and create an event plan for the local Alzheimer Society which will assist in fulfilling the mission of improving the quality of life of persons living with dementia and provide support for their care partners.

“I heard from staff members that felt the focus group was a very valuable experience. We are so grateful to receive fresh perspectives at this crucial time of expansion. There were great suggestions we’re looking to implement. I look forward to welcoming everyone to the new Alzheimer Society offices once they open,” said Terry Caporossi, Executive Director.

The partnership was a very positive experience and beneficial to both parties - especially the students. “For us, it's important that students experience the day-to-day operations and activities of our community partners. We are fortunate and grateful to have the local Alzheimer Society work with our program to provide the students with an exciting opportunity that will benefit both parties," said Natasha DeActis, Professor at Sault College.

Nicolas Borrelli, a student from the program said, “The best part of our program is being able to work with clients in the community. It’s very rewarding to get the opportunity to see what you’ve learned in school pay off in a real-world scenario. Being able to work with the local Alzheimer Society is an experience I’ll always remember.”
