NEWS RELEASE

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

*************************
What if a financial barrier was stopping the next Sidney Crosby from stepping on the ice? What if the next Christine Sinclair could not afford soccer cleats? You can help a child’s dream come true by providing them with an equal opportunity to participate in an organized sport.

Big Brothers Big Sisters in partnership with Healthy Kids Community Challenge, Social Services, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, Algoma University and #activesault will be collecting gently-used sports equipment during the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The drop-off location will be outside at the main entrance of the Essar Centre. Staff and volunteers will be collecting items on-site during the bronze and gold-medal games on Nov. 5, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. (bronze) and 7:30 p.m. (gold).

Suggested items are boys’ and girls’ youth-sized skates, hockey sticks, helmets, cleats, baseball gloves, baseball bats, soccer balls, footballs, etc.

Stats Canada reports that a family with a child participating in organized sports will spend $579 annually on equipment alone! Your donation will ease the financial burden for our program participants and families increasing the likelihood of youth sport participation

Equipment donations will be presented to the youth of the participating agencies at the annual outdoor skate in the New Year, allowing for the children to choose their new equipment… and hit the ice!

Thank You Hockey Canada and the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie Essar Centre for providing such a great opportunity!
