On Aug. 31 at 11 am, the staff of Algoma Steel’s Sample Lab won the $131,502.50 jackpot in the Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s (SAHF) August electronic and online 50/50 draw. Their lucky number (V-2556447) was drawn electronically and they were contacted immediately.

The full group of seven winners includes: Matthew Scott of Iron Bridge, Maurice Jobidon of Prince Township, Gary Asprey of Echo Bay and Allan Houston, Aaron Tanninen, Brian Stoneman, and James White – all of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. The Sample Lab, where all seven work, is where all raw materials are tested prior to the production of steel. Each will take home $18,786.

The group have been purchasing tickets for SAHF 50/50 together for well over a year – since before the prize ever grew past $100,000. “We’ve tried lottery groups before, but they didn’t always stick. SAHF 50/50 was different. The entire group here at the Sample Lab wants to be part of it,” said Brian Stoneman, the group’s leader. “Just knowing it’s a local worthy cause, and a great prize every month, is incredible. We were excited that the $10,000 early bird was being added for September, never expecting we’d get this call today!”

New in September, SAHF 50/50 is adding a $10,000 early bird draw (replacing the $2,000 early bird draws of previous months). On Sept. 10 at 2 p.m., one ticket will be drawn and the winner will take home this large cash prize as an incentive to purchase early. All ticket purchasers will be eligible for the grand prize, which is 50% of total sales and has ranged from the $131,000 prize seen this month to nearly $300,000 in peak months. The added early bird prize does not affect the grand prize; this additional prize comes out of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s portion of the proceeds.

“We know the summer months can be slower as far as sales – that’s natural. Still, even during the busy month of August, we’re grateful that over 10,000 people were still buying their tickets faithfully and lending their support. We are anticipating more activity as we head into the fall, and want to keep this draw exciting. That’s why we’ve added the larger early bird prize,” said Teresa Martone, Executive Director, Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “Purchasing your tickets early helps the prize grow quickly – and that’s a key component of the draw’s success. With our 5 Car Draw in June, we saw lots of excitement for the $10,000 early bird prize, so we’re hoping to replicate that success with our 50/50. We want to keep this draw as engaging as possible to continue to raise significant funds to purchase the medical equipment our hospital needs year after year.”

Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s goal is to raise upwards of $5 million annually. It is projected that over $10 million in medical equipment will be introduced at Sault Area Hospital this year to replace and upgrade the equipment purchased when the hospital opened its doors over 10 years ago. Tickets for SAHF 50/50’s September draw are on sale now. Over $3.7 million in prizes has been awarded to date.

This month’s massive early bird draw will take place on Sept.10 at 2 p.m. Get your tickets before this draw for the additional chance at $10,000, on top of the monthly grand prize!

Congratulations to last month’s early bird winners: Kristen Egan (V-1502643) & Susan Meeks (V-5405096), both winning $2,000 each.

SAHF 50/50 tickets can be purchased by anyone 18+ years old within the province of Ontario at www.soo5050.ca. Visit the page regularly and follow us on Facebook where the winning number reveal takes place live for each draw.

On behalf of the entire community, thank you to all who continue to support. When our hospital purchases equipment like this, we all win.
