SAULT STE. MARIE TENNIS ASSOCIATION

The history of tennis in Sault Ste. Marie goes back to the very early days of the city more than 100 years. More than 100 years ago the St Mary’s River Boat Club had boating and tennis on the property known to many in Sault Ste. Marie as the old RYTAC.

Generations of families learned boating and tennis skills on the property off Queen Street near the bottom of Pine Street. In the 1960s and 1970s, there were over 600 people enjoying boating and tennis in Sault Ste. Marie. The old RYTAC property is now owned by Sault College and has been rebranded the Waterfront and Tennis Centre.

The Sault Ste. Marie Tennis Association represents the interests of all tennis players in Sault Ste. Marie and is a partner with Sault College to develop the Waterfront and Tennis Centre.

Apr. 26 at the Grand Gardens North the Sault Ste. Marie Tennis Association is hosting a fundraising dinner for the Waterfront and Tennis Centre. The organizing committee is inviting everyone who remembers what RYTAC used to be and everyone who sees the potential for tennis and boating to be great again in Sault Ste. Marie.

The event will include family style dinner and cash bar. Tickets are $35/person and $10/youth (4-10). Tables of eight or 10 or 12 are available and if you reserve a table, tickets are $30/person.

Visit www.ssmtennisassociation.com to learn more and purchase tickets. Tickets are also available at Sault College and from a number of tennis players listed online.

The event will offer donated marketplace goods for sale. The event will display plans for the Waterfront and Tennis Centre and will promote the sale of tennis memberships for this season. The event will also display plans for tennis lessons, tennis leagues and tournaments this season.

Sault Ste. Marie Tennis Association is a member club of the Ontario Tennis Association and Tennis Canada. SSMTA is incorporated as a nonprofit association with the purpose to partner with other community entities to encourage and grow tennis in Sault Ste. Marie.

SSMTA has been instrumental in getting Tennis to be offered in a number of Sault Ste. Marie schools and the number is growing. Tennis can be played from 5 to 85 and offers a unique sport for girls and boys and for social aspects as well.

Support tennis, support the community, and support Sault College by attending the Apr. 26 fundraising dinner. The dinner promises to be an exciting event as a very important step to restore tennis and boating sports towards their previous glory in Sault Ste. Marie.
