HEAD START IN BUSINESS

Entrepreneurship awareness is starting at a young age in Sault Ste. Marie. Create a Logo and Market Your Thoughts are free in-school entrepreneurship workshops and contests targeting students in grades 2-6 and 7-8 across Northern Ontario.

Students participating in these workshops are encouraged to compete by identifying and naming a business opportunity that they believe could work in their community, region or province.

Create a Logo participants submit a paragraph describing what their business is about and design a logo that reflects their business and briefly explain the meaning of their logo. Market Your Thoughts participants submit an essay and multimedia plan explaining their business idea. 

One grade level winner is selected per school and the lucky winners take home $25, a t-shirt and certificate for his or her logo. All final entries from across Northern Ontario are judged in Kapuskasing, Ontario for regional awards where students win $100 for their logos and business ideas.

Last year, over 300 students from Sault Ste. Marie participated in the contests. Local budding entrepreneur Jared Caputo took home the grand prize from among all grade 7 entries across Northeastern Ontario, winning $100 for his business idea “PWN Game Lounge”.

A big thank you goes out to the main funders of Head Start in Business, FedNor, The Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and to its many stakeholders who have continuously offered their support in bringing entrepreneurial opportunities to youth across Northern Ontario.

These entrepreneurship programs are part of Head Start in Business (formerly the Northern Ontario Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative) provided by Northern Ontario Community Futures Development Corporations.
