Algoma U board welcomes new members

Algoma University has appointed Lana Grawbarger, Anne Marie Jones, Alex Lambert, Michael Moraca and Dr. David Nanang to its Board of Governors.

"These new members bring a wealth of experience as well as diverse perspectives to the table," said Board Chair Mark Nogalo. "Their collective work in industry, government, and Indigenous affairs will assist the Board as the University continues to grow."

Lana Grawbarger is the Shingwauk Education Trust and the Shingwauk Kinoomage Gamig representative. She is the great-great-granddaughter of Chief Shingwauk and granddaughter of the late Dr. Dan Pine. She served three terms on the Council for Native Ministry at the national church level and worked in the field of Early Childhood Education for 30 years as a teacher, program director and consultant. She is a lay pastor and servant for the community of Garden River and surrounding area.
 
Anne Marie Jones is the Garden River First Nation representative. She is the post-secondary counsellor for the Garden River First Nation Education Unit and is responsible for administering all aspects of the post-secondary program from budgeting to completing the annual Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada report. Most importantly, she provides daily support to students in their educational endeavors.
 
Alex Lambert is the CEO of the Group Health Centre. His career spans the public and private sectors across several different industries, most recently with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, where he led contract negotiations on behalf of the government, and CML HealthCare, where he led a three-year Canadian acquisition program for diagnostic imaging. He has an MBA from the Ivey Business School – Western University.
 
Michael Moraca has been working in the Steel Industry for over a decade. Currently, he is the treasurer at Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. With over 13 years of corporate experience he has worked in varying finance roles in fast paced and continuously changing environments. Mike holds a Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies from Western University with a concentration in Finance. He is also a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario, holding the designation CPA, CMA.
 
Dr. David Nanang is the director general at Natural Resources Canada’s Great Lakes Forestry Centre. Dr. Nanang is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto and represents Natural Resources Canada on the Great Lakes Executive Committee and on the Board of Directors (Ex-Officio) of the Invasive Species Centre. Internationally, Dr. Nanang has held forestry positions in Ghana including as Deputy District Forest Officer and Lecturer in Forestry at the University for Development Studies. He was a key member of the taskforce that established the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in Ghana.
 
In addition to these external appointments, the university has also filled the following internal Board positions: Pauline Danquah as the Algoma University Students’ Union representative, Jon Cada as the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association representative and Rose Linklater as the support staff representative.
