28 years of kicking off the summer with the 5 Car Draw

The annual Sault Area Hospital Foundation (SAHF) 5 Car Draw is in its 28th year. SAHF kicks off every summer the right way, by awarding 5 brand new vehicles to the drawn ticket holders while raising funds to support the purchase of medical equipment for our community Hospital.

Since the first ticket sale, this draw has raised over $3.6 million to help purchase the tools our local healthcare providers need to deliver excellent care in the Algoma District, keeping patients close to home during the time of care.

The draw was developed by Joe Orazietti, Volunteer Chair of the 5 Car Draw. “Twenty eight years ago I approached each of the Sault Ste. Marie Hospitals. I eventually worked with the General Hospital Foundation to get things moving. We printed 10,000 tickets and on June 23, 1990, we gave away 5 brand new vehicles. Every year since then has been a blast.” Orazietti remembers the past years.

“Tickets in 1990 were $25 each, and that was a fairly high price, but everyone knew that winning a new truck or car for $25 was a great deal. That’s why we’ve never raised the price. We decided 3 years ago to just find more prizes to give away.”

This year there will be 20 draws; 5 - $500 Esso Gas Cards courtesy of McDougall Energy, 10 - $1,000 Cash prizes from the following sponsors (Algoma Hearing Centre, Atlas Auto Parts/Batteries Expert, Prouse Chevrolet, Cliffe Printing, Deresti Motors, Fountain Tire, Maitland Ford Lincoln, Feet First & Associates and Anthony Pucci – RBC Dominion Securities) and of course the 5 brand new vehicles!

The vehicles in drawing order are a 2017: Dodge RAM 1500 SXT Quad Cab 4x4, Toyota Highlander LE, Ford Escape S 4WD, Chevrolet Cruze LS Sedan and Mazda 3 GX Sedan. The total prize package is worth $191,939.21.

The proceeds of this draw will be used to help purchase the new CT Scanner for Sault Area Hospital. The CT Scanners at SAH run 24 hours, 7 days a week to diagnose all types of ailments, illnesses and injuries in patients from across the Algoma District. The scanners run over 20,000 tests annually and it will cost $1.9 million to replace the eldest of the two.
