Calgary – Team Red was first on the board in Game # 2 of the National Summer Under-18 Team Red vs. White intersquad series, just as they were in Game # 1.

Tyler Ennis (Edmonton, AB/ Medicine Hat, WHL) found a loose puck in front of Team White goaltender Kurtis Mucha (Sherwood Park, AB/ Portland, WHL), and waited until the goaltender committed himself before sliding the puck past him for the first goal of the game at 7:58 of the first period.

Ennis was front and center again later in the period, during a power play, beating Mucha with a quick shot from the slot. Team Red left the ice after the first period with a 2-0 lead, and having dominated on the shot clock as well, with a 14-6 advantage.

Team White scored the only goal of the middle frame, as Brad Malone (Miramichi, NB/ Cushing Academy) scored at 6:21. Both teams changed goaltenders midway through the second with Justin Leclerc taking over for Trevor Cann for Team Red and Jake Fischer (Belle River, ON/ Windsor, ON) taking Mucha’s place.

Team White continued to press for the equalizer early in the third but Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon, SK/ Lethbridge, WHL) was up to the task and made two sparkling saves to keep Team Red ahead.

A 4:42, Team Red made it 3-1 as Dwight King (Meadow Lake, SK/ Lethbridge, WHL) registered his first of two on the night, taking a pass from Yves Bastien and pushing it by Fischer. But Team White responded in kind, and tied it up on two quick goals. Zach Boychuk (Airdrie, AB/Lethbridge, WHL) made it 3-2 at 6:47, then Bryan Cameron (Brampton, ON/ Belleville, OHL) scored a shorthanded goal and the game was even at 3-3.

After five of frantic action, Team Red took the wind out of Team White’s sails on a power play, as P.K. Subban (Rexdale, ON/ Belleville, OHL) scored from the point. King added his second at 16:08, and Brett Sonne (Maple Ridge, BC/ Calgary, WHL) had an empty net goal as Team Red skated to a 6-3 win.

The third and final intersquad game goes on Tuesday, at 6pm, at Calgary’s Father David Bauer. Intersquad games at the National Summer Under-18 Team Selection Camp are open to the public and free of charge.
