Wolves to meet Whalers in OHL championship

Sault product Matt Dias lifted the Sudbury Wolves into the Ontario Hockey League championship series.

On Friday night in the Nickel City, Dias, shown in this file photo with the Soo Thunderbirds, scored three minutes into triple overtime to give the Wolves a 4-3 game six victory over the Belleville Bulls.

The 4-2 series win gives the Wolves, who have won six of seven overtime games in rounds two and three, their first eastern conference championship.

Sudbury now meets the Plymouth Whalers, who knocked off the London Knights in five games for the western conference title, for the league crown and a trip to the Memorial Cup.

Plymouth, who outsted the Knights with a 4-1 win in game five on Thursday, will host game one on Friday night.

Aside from being Sudbury's first trip to the OHL finals in their 31-year history, the sellout crowd of 5,748 in game six was their first capacity crowd since Eric Lindros and the Oshawa Generals visited the Sudbury Arena in 1992.
