The Soo Greyhounds nearly saw two points slip away.

The Sudbury Wolves tied the Ontario Hockey League contest with 1.8 seconds left in the third period but the Hounds rallied in an overtime shootout to claim a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at the Steelback Centre.

It was the Hounds' third victory in a row under head coach Denny Lambert, who will now turn the reigns back over to Craig Hartsburg.

Hartsburg brought the crowd to its feet at the beginning of the second period as the head coach of the gold medal winning Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships dangled his gold medal out of the window from the private box of the Greyhounds brass.

Goaltender Kyle Gajewski was the star of the game for the Greyhounds and looked poised to record a shutout until Patrik Lusnak notched the tying goal during a late scramble around the Greyhound goal.

Gajewski, the game's first star, made several quality saves throughout the contest and stopped 24 of 25 shots before shutting down all three Wolves attempts in the shootout.

Dustin Jeffrey beat Wolves goaltender Kevin Beech, who also had a stellar performance, for the game winner on the first shootout attempt for the Hounds.

Rookie centre Anthony Perdicaro scored his first OHL goal late in the second period to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.

With the victory in front of 4,716 fans, the locals, who again played one skater short of a full lineup, improve to 19-18-0-4 for 42 points.

The Greyhounds continue their homestand next weekend as the Mississauga IceDogs visit the Steelback Centre on Friday and the Toronto St. Michael's Majors roll into town on Saturday.

Game times are 7:30 p.m. both nights.
