Two locals win gymnastics gold (updated)

Daylan Dorricott and Kaylee Raynor captured gold medals for their overall results at the 6th Annual Gymtrix Sunshine Classic Gymnastics Meet in North Bay over the weekend.

Dorricott captured his feat in the Boys Interclub 11+ division with four first place finishes while Raynor won top honours in the Girls Interclub Cadette A , ages 7 & 8 group with first place finishes in three events.

Dorricott and Raynor were just two of the 32 competitors from the Sault Gymnastics Club.

Also competing were those in the Masters category for gymnasts ages 18 and over. The Masters division is for both experienced gymnasts and beginners.

Jeannette Dugas and Natalie Head have made their return to the sport this year and posted top results in the Masters ranks. Dugas is returning after an eight-year absence from the sport while Head returns after a 10-year hiatus.

The Gymnastics Club had four competitors in the Showcase category, for those in the competitve stream that are too young to compete at the Cadette level.

In the boys Showcase category, ages 6 & 7, Cristian Sprague and Nathan Reid competed in all six events including the Vault, Floor, Rings, Parallel Bars, Pommel Horse and High Bar.

In the girls Showcase category, ages 5 & 6, Elissa Wilson and Lydia Heimonen competed in all four events including the Vault, Floor, Uneven Bars and Balance Beam.

Meanwhile, Shelby MacDonald used the event as preparation for this week's Canadian National Gymnastics Championships at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

MacDonald begins the event on Wednesday with action in all four events including the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor.

At the national championships, the National Team will make their selections for upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Athens.
