The Dallas Stars locked up a key member of their present and future on Thursday, inking defenseman Trevor Daley to a two-year contract through the 2007-2008 season. A second-round draft pick in the 2002 Entry Draft, Daley is coming off a season in which he skated in 81 games for the club, registering three goals and 11 assists for 14 points with 87 penalty minutes.

"Trevor has shown us that he has a promising future in the National Hockey League and we are glad to have him with our hockey club over the next two seasons," said General Manager Doug Armstrong. "We will look for him to continue to improve his game and make an impact within our organization in 2006-07." The 5-11, 207-pound defenseman missed just one game last season and in 108 career NHL games with Dallas, he has posted 20 points (4-16-20). He also represented Team Canada at the 2006 World Championships in Latvia at the completion of last season.

"I'm obviously really happy about signing this deal and I'm also very excited about being a Dallas Star for at least two more years, and hopefully more to come," said Daley. "I'm going to take this one year at a time, and hopefully one Cup at a time. I knew it was only a matter of time until this deal got done, since I know what Dallas thinks of me and they know what I think of this organization."

The Toronto native played four seasons with Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 1999-03, and in 216 games with the Greyhounds, collected 59 goals and 129 assists for 188 points.

Daley spent this summer in Dallas, working out and preparing for the new NHL season, and he has high hopes for both team and individual success in 2006-07.

"I've been here all summer getting ready for the season and I'm continuing to work hard to improve my game," said Daley. "With the team we have here, there are a number of talented veterans to learn from. We want to win and expand on our great regular seasons. We were disappointed about the way our season ended last year, and we're going to work our hardest to make sure that doesn't happen again."

Daley counts himself lucky to have been drafted by the Stars and looks forward to continued success in his new hometown.

"The ultimate goal is to win a Stanley Cup, and playing here is Dallas is obviously a treat," said Daley. "There aren't many better cities in the league and the organization goes out of its way to make sure all the players are well taken care of. I feel very lucky to be a part of this organization and I want to be a Star for a real long time. Getting this new contract worked out is a good first step in that."
