Timusk claims top prize at ACT Awards

Kristen Timusk claimed the top prize given to local female high school athletes by claiming the Percy Bedford Award on Wednesday night at the 32nd Annual Associated Canadian Travellers Female Athletic Awards dinner at the Marconi Hall.

Kristen Timusk claimed the top prize given to local female high school athletes by claiming the Percy Bedford Award on Wednesday night at the 32nd Annual Associated Canadian Travellers Female Athletic Awards dinner at the Marconi Hall.

Timusk, a four-sport athlete at Bawating, captured the Bedford Award, given annually to the female high school athlete of the year, for her performance in basketball, volleyball, badminton and track and field.

Other Bedford nominees included Sir James Dunn's Andrea Bettello, St. Basil's Rachel Cobean, White Pines Crystal Eisler, St. Mary's Alicia Miller, Mount St. Joseph College's Laurie Officer and Korah's Liza Turpin.

Next season, Timusk will look to take her talents south of the border with plans to enter Iowa's Weslayan College in the fall.

The Bedford Award was the second award of the night for Timusk as the 18 year-old was recognized as the top volleyball player this past season.

White Pine's Holly Maskell emerged with a top prize by winning the Hazel Morrison Award, given annually to top track and field performer.

In other individual sports, Korah's Brittany Hogan and Kayla Odoruzzi won the Badminton Award, Katrina Huopalainen from Korah won the Basketball Award, Sir James Dunn's Heather McLeod captured the Cross-Country Running Award and SJD's Alyson Scott won the Bob Faught Award for excellence in curling.

This year's Harvey Morrison Award winners, who made significant contributions to their school's athletic program, were Bawating's Courtney Pinder, Sir James Dunn's Kaylin Woods, Krista Delarosbil from Mount St. Joseph College, Korah's Jaclyn Cummings, Katie Coccimiglio of St. Basil and St. Mary's Laura Morrison.
