One day is complete at the 2005 edition of the Guy Vetrie Invitational Basketball Tournament in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Bawating Braves emerged as the top local team from the high school senior boys tournament on Thursday with a pair of wins on home court.

The Braves opened the tournament with a 52-37 win over the Central Algoma Secondary School Huskies before capping the day off with a 51-28 win over Newmarket's Sacred Heart.

D.J. Wright led the Braves in the win over Sacred Heart with 24 points while Craig Nielson added 23. Wright scored a game high 25 points in the victory over CASS while Jeremy Hodgson topped the Huskies with 10.

In other matchups, the St. Mary's Knights were the only other local team to gather a win on opening day by hammering Blind River's W.C. Eaket 97-15. Pat Murray led a balanced Knights attack with 20 points and Wes Ontonovich added 19.

The Sir James Dunn Eagles dropped a close 55-52 decision to Sudbury's Lo-Ellen Park. Mike Beharriell topped the Eagles with 13 points while D.J. Idehen and Jamie Weldon added 10 each. Doug Nielson paced Lo-Ellen with 18 points.

The Korah Colts opened with a 62-29 loss to North Carolina's Laurinburg Charter as Christian Johnson led the Colts with 13 points. Joe Lindsey led Charter with 16 points.

St. Basil dropped a pair of games on Thursday as the Saints opened with a 60-38 loss to Sudbury's LaSalle before dropping a 44-26 decision to Timmins. Josh Marasco led the Saints with 21 points in the loss to LaSalle then followed with a 15 point effort against. Timmins.

At White Pines, the Wolverines fell 58-38 to Sudbury Lockerby. Mike Wiemer and Alanzo Clark led the Wolverines with eight points each while Brian Davidson had 21 points for Lockerby.

The CASS Huskies dropped their second game of the day 55-37 to Thunder Bay's Hammarskjold. Jason Riplinger topped the Huskies with 18 points while Rob Hurley and Tyler King added seven each. Joel Pankewich scored 19 points for Hammarskjold and Ross Nyantakyi 15.

Toronto Area Prep School put up triple digits in a 107-45 win over Thunder Bay's Churchill. Chris Middleton led T.A.P.S. with 26 points while Zan Klein topped Churchill with 11 points.

Defending champion Father Henry Carr from Toronto used 16 points from Marlo Davis in a 66-43 win over Toronto's Robert F. Hall while Hamilton's St. Mary's edged Toronto's Chinguacousy 58-57 in another game.

Teams will conclude the round robin within their own pools on Friday before advancing into either the championship round or consolation round on Saturday.

The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Korah.
