Thunderbirds swarm Jr. Wolves

The Soo Thunderbirds jumped out to a quick start and cruised to a 6-4 win over the Sudbury Junior Wolves on Friday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The Soo Thunderbirds jumped out to a quick start and cruised to a 6-4 win over the Sudbury Junior Wolves on Friday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

After one period, the Thunderbirds led 4-0 and built the lead to 5-0 early in the second frame.

Randy Wills, Adam Pyymaki, Andy McMillan on the power play and Brad DiCandia scored in the opneing 20 minutes while DiCandia netted another shorthanded in the second period.

Shawn Bibeau would cap the game scoring for the Soo in the third period. Jake Reid picked up three assists for the Birds while Tyler Lannigan set up a pair. Bibeau and McMillan also had assists. Ryan Dube stopped 35 of 38 shots in goal for the win.

Former Soo Greyhound Scott Restoule, Brenden Biedermann and Shane Neeley scored for Sudbury.

With the win over the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League leaders, the locals improve to 10-7 and sit in a three-way tie for fourth place overall.

The Thunderbirds are back in action Sunday at the Rhodes as they host cross-border rival Soo Indians at 7:30 p.m. in another installment of the Carmen Provenzano Memorial Cup series.
