Thunderbirds strike quick in home win

Five unanswered goals were the difference for the Soo Thunderbirds on Friday night

Trailing by a pair of goals, the Soo Thunderbirds reeled off five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory over the Powassan Voodoos on Friday night at the GFL Memorial Gardens.

The Thunderbirds scored three times in the second period, including goals by Avery Rebek and Noah Boman 46 seconds apart to erase a 2-0 Powassan lead.

Kaidan McDonald had a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds.

Gage Stephney and Steve Bellini also scored for the locals.

Goaltender Colin Ahern made 24 saves.

Clark Allair and Henry Scott scored for the Voodoos.

Powassan goaltender Joe Vrbetic stopped 23 shots.

The Thunderbirds will take a 30-9-0-1 record into action on Sunday afternoon on the road in Espanola against the Express.

Powassan falls to 20-16-1-1 with the loss.
