Thunderbirds open homestand in home-and-home finale

The Soo Thunderbirds wrapped up a home-and-home series with the Rayside Balfour Canadians on Friday night and kept a winning streak in tact in the process.

The Thunderbirds picked up a 3-2 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League win over the Canadians on Friday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Lucas Theriault’s goal at 16:15 of the second period was the game-winner for the Thunderbirds.

Braden Robbins added a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds. Brendan Miller also scored for the home side.

Thunderbirds goaltender Eric Schuch made 31 saves, including 23 in the final two periods.

The Thunderbirds, who have won eight in a row, improve to 22-7-2-0 with the victory and move seven points ahead of the Blind River Beavers in the NOJHL’s West Division in the process.

Noah Serre and James White completed the scoring for the Canadians, who fall to 18-10-1-1.

Rayside goaltender Brayden Lachance made 30 saves.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Saturday night with a home game at the John Rhodes Community Centre against the Soo (Mich.) Eagles. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.

Prior to the game, the Thunderbirds will honour former goaltender Michael Doan in a jersey retirement ceremony.
