Thunderbirds midgets sweep Kapuskasing

The Great North Midget League's Soo Thunderbirds picked up a pair of weekend wins to improve to 3-1 in regular season play.

The Thunderbirds squeezed out a 4-3 win over the Kapuskasing Flyers on Sunday afternoon to cap off a weekend sweep that included a 6-2 win on Saturday night.

On Sunday, Jared Fanti’s goal in the third period held up as the winner in a game that saw the Thunderbirds open up a 3-0 lead, only to see the Flyers claw back and make the game close in the third period.

“We were okay for bits and pieces (of the game),” Thunderbirds coach Jim Capy said after Sunday’s win. “We talked about developing a killer instinct at the end of the second period. We had them down 3-0 and needed to battle to put them away and didn’t do that. It was the same thing (Saturday). We had them in the same spot down 3-0 and let them back in the game and did the same thing today. We’ve got to learn to put teams away.”

“I’ll give Kapuskasing a lot of credit, they work extremely hard from the start to the end of the game,” said Capy.

Brad Thrower had a goal and an assist on Sunday for the Thunderbirds while Brendan Gillis and Ryan Mulligan also scored.

Chad Robert, Trevor Cheff and Tyler Minoletti scored for Kapuskasing in Sunday’s loss.

“We’re a 1-6 team but we’ve competed in every game very tight so I don’t think our record really shows that,” said Flyers coach Glen Denney. “We’re still making a lot of mistakes and we pay for them when we do.”

“I give our guys credit, we got down and made some mistakes but kept fighting,” Denney added.

On Saturday night, Gillisscored three times to lead the Thunderbirds offensively. Jakob Porco added two goals for the Thunderbirds while Thrower and Carter Loubery also had two-point nights for the locals with two assists each. Fanti had the other goal in Saturday's win for the Thunderbirds.

Minoletti and Raphael Lecours scored for Kapuskasing in Saturday's loss.
