The Soo Thunderbirds opened a short two-game Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League road trip on a sour note on Friday night.

A power play goal by Carson Andreoli was the eventual game-winner as the Elliot Lake Wildcats handed the Thunderbirds a 4-2 loss at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake.

Goaltender Logan Sawka made 37 saves for the Wildcats. Brett Cook had a goal and an assist for Elliot Lake. Mark Perone and Jacob Kelly also scored.

Tyler Malpass and Lucas Theriault scored for the Thunderbirds while goaltender Eric Schuch stopped 39 shots.

Having lost three-straight, the Thunderbirds fall to 29-12-2-1 and hold a narrow two-point lead over the Rayside Balfour Canadians atop the NOJHL’s West Division.

Meanwhile, Elliot Lake improves to 20-25-4-0.

The Thunderbirds wrap up the weekend on Saturday night on the road in Espanola against the Express.
