Thomas Cory leaves Cougars for Algoma coaching job

Thomas Cory Named New Head Coach of Algoma Thunderbirds Men's Basketball Team

Due to Varsity program restructuring at Algoma University College, Jeff Giovanatti is unable to continue as head coach for the Algoma Thunderbirds.

As a result of the vacant position, it is with great enthusiasm that Algoma U announces the hiring of Thomas Cory as the new head coach for Algoma U's Thunderbird men's basketball team.

After a very successful four year stint as head coach with the Sault College Cougars, Cory became available after his resignation on Wednesday of this week. With winning seasons each of his four years with the Cougars, and three OCAA playoff appearances, Cory comes to the Thunderbirds with valuable experience not only as a coach but also a player.

The former CCAA National Champion with Durham College and professional player in Portugal will use his past experiences, resources and contacts to develop a foundation which will solidify the Varsity program at Algoma.

Thomas will be expected to direct a great deal of energy towards building basketball partnerships at the local, provincial and national level. It will be these partnerships that will provide permanency to the Thunderbird program.

"Jeff will be missed by the University community. He played here and helped get the team to the next level" adds Thunderbird Athletic Director Mark Kontulainen. "Thomas will bring another dimension to the program and hopefully continue his winning ways"

Thomas officially takes over Monday April 24 2006.
