New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro has signed the longest contract in National Hockey League history today.

The soon-to-be 25 year-old goaltender inked a 15-year contract worth $67.5 million. The deal will pay DiPeitro $4.5 million per season.

The contract is the second longest in North American major sports history, trailing only Magic Johnson's 25-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1981.

Wayne Gretzky signed a 21-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers at one time but it was a personal services contract and not an NHL deal.

DiPietro now tops the 10-year, $87.5 million contract Alexei Yashin signed with the Islanders in 2001.
