A huge weight was lifted off the shoulders of the Soo Greyhounds on Friday night.

After going 0-3 in the opening week of the Steelback Centre, the Hounds finally scored the elusive first win in their new pound by beating the Belleville Bulls 4-2.

Playing with grit and hustle, the Greyhounds outworked the Bulls and set the tone physically from the opening shift. A Greyhounds power play, which was struggling heading into the contest, connected for all four goals.

The Bulls did grab a 1-0 lead in the first period when Shawn Matthias roofed a perfect shot over the right shoulder of Kyle Gajewski.

Brandon Biggers made his presence felt in his first game in a Greyhounds uniform as he tangled with the Bulls' Steve Whitely in a first period fight.

In the second period, the Greyhounds answered back 13 seconds into the frame as Cody Thornton's fifth goal of the season rang off the post and in.

Just 3:57 later, the Hounds took their first ever lead in the Steelback Centre as Dustin Jeffrey tipped Josh Godfrey's point shot past Bulls goaltender Kevin Lalande for his 10th of the year.

Belleville evened the score at 2-2 at 8:01 while short handed as Nick Pageau's dump in fooled Gajewski and found the back of the net.

Biggers then scored his first goal of the season and first as a Hound when he tipped Michael Quesnele's point blast with 13.6 seconds remaining in the period for a 3-2 Soo lead. The Greyhounds outshot the Bulls in the period 17-5.

In the third period, Thornton's second goal of the night provided some insurance while Gajewski was called upon to make some huge saves to keep the Bulls off the scoreboard.

The Hounds outshot the Bulls 33-18. Thornton captured first star honours while Jeffrey was named second star and Biggers third.

Further details will be added.
