The Hounds traded to get two star players . . .

... four days ago, so they didn't need to make any deals today

The Ontario Hockey League trade deadline came and went on Wednesday afternoon and for the Soo Greyhounds, the deadline came and went quietly.

Following Wednesday’s deadline, Greyhounds General Manager Kyle Raftis said he wasn’t close to anything.

“After the overage deadline, there were some conversations about a couple of difference scenarios that might have played out but nothing materialized,” Raftis said.

The approach to the deadline was one of not adding players for the sake of adding as the team entered action on Wednesday night against Saginaw with a record of 34-3-2-1 and a 15-point lead over the Sarnia Sting atop the OHL’s West Division.

“It’s a group that, when you see how we were winning games, we obviously have a few guys that have really stepped up their game,” Raftis said. “It’s a group that has had a lot of the offence and defensive play has been by committee.”

“It’s a really tight-knit group,” Raftis added. “I was trying to be very careful (heading into the deadline). A lot of people said, ‘Maybe you shouldn’t do anything and just let the team roll.’ That was always an option for us. When we were looking at how we could improve the team and make an addition without taking away from what we do well. We tried to target players that fit into what we do. I know what they’re like off the ice. I know what they’re going to bring to our dressing room and know that they’re going to complement our group.”

Over the weekend, the Greyhounds made a splash, acquiring high-scoring forward Taylor Raddysh and steady defenceman Jordan Sambrook from the Erie Otters in exchange for Hayden Fowler and draft picks.

Raftis said that had the deal with the Otters not panned out, there was the potential that the team might not have made a move heading into the deadline.

“With us it was a matter of not getting away from what we are,” Raftis said. “That’s what’s given us success to this point and that’s what has put us in the situation of looking to add.”

Acquiring the rights to overage forward Jonne Tammela from the Peterborough Petes on Tuesday ahead of the OHL’s overage trade deadline would end up being the lone move made by the team as the deadline for all other players passed at noon Wednesday.

Raftis called the deal with the Petes a “potentially low-risk, high-reward move.”

“He’s a player that has good speed, a good motor inside of him and he shoots the puck really well,” Raftis said. “Being a 20-year-old, he’s heavier and he’s stronger so we’ll have to see how it comes together in the next couple of days.”

A draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning and signed by the NHL club, Tammela has spent the season with Tampa’s American League affiliate in Syracuse this season but hasn’t played yet as he recovers from a knee injury suffered last season.

Raftis said he’s been in discussions with the Lightning regarding Tammela’s next step as the 20-year-old is currently skating with Syracuse but not involved in contact as of yet.

Tammela played in two games with the Petes last season before eventually needing surgery. A subsequent setback while rehabbing to return to game action ended his season.

“They’re reviewing some options and making sure, because of the length of time he’s missed already, they want to make sure they make the right decision in terms of when he’s going to return,” Raftis said. “He sounds close, but they’re being careful because of how the past has gone.”

The lone other roster change ahead of the deadline was the release of forward Calvin Martin, who saw limited action with the team this season.

Martin had been exploring the option of playing in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and on Wednesday was listed on the roster of the QMJHL’s Val-d’Or Foreurs.

Wednesday’s trade deadline passed with just four deals being completed around the league.

The Kitchener Rangers dealt forward Cole Carter to the Mississauga Steelheads for a trio of draft picks.

The Hamilton Bulldogs acquired three picks, one of which is conditional, from the Saginaw Spirit in exchange for defenceman Reilly Webb.

Mississauga and Hamilton completed a deal that sees Jake Gravelle head to Hamilton for a draft pick.

The big deal of the day saw the Barrie Colts and Sudbury Wolves swap import forwards as the Colts dealt forward Alexey Lipanov to Sudbury for Dmitry Sokolov and a conditional draft pick.
