Lakers take three points from Bulldogs

Blain scores LSSU's lone goal in 1-1 tie

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State skated to a 1-1 overtime tie with Ferris State on Saturday to garner its first three-point weekend of the season.

Jason Blain knocked in a rebound off a shot by Nathan Perkovich for LSSU's lone goal at 5:01 of the first period. Perkovich stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated to FSU's net to set up the scoring opportunity. It was Blain's first goal of the season.

Ferris State answered on a power-play goal by Justin Menke at 14:16 of the second period.

LSSU (5-16-5 overall, 3-13-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) shut out the Bulldogs in the third period for the second straight night. The Lakers got several key saves from goaltender Pat Inglis, who started for the first time since Jan. 18 at Miami.

LSSU held the Bulldogs scoreless in the second and third period Friday to win 4-3. Seven of the Lakers' last 13 games against FSU have been decided in overtime. LSSU is 3-1-1 in its last five games against FSU with all but the tie being one-goal decisions.

Inglis totaled 36 saves, including 15 in the penalty-ridden second period and 11 in the third. He was forced to make five stops, including two stellar saves in overtime.

Ferris State (10-12-4 overall, 7-10-3 CCHA) finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while LSSU was 0-for-6. FSU goaltender Mitch O'Keefe totaled 23 saves.

The Lakers, who are unbeaten in their last three games, head to Western Michigan on Feb. 8-9.

Lakers edge Bulldogs 3-2

LSSU defense shuts out FSU during final 46 minutes

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State's defense held strong for 46:29 and enabled the Laker hockey team to hold a one-goal lead and beat Ferris State 3-2 Friday at Taffy Abel Arena.

LSSU (5-16-4 overall, 3-13-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season, while FSU (10-12-3 overall and 7-10-2) fell to 0-3-1 in its last four games.

Ferris State's Adam Miller scored at 3:47 of the first period to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead, but Laker Josh Sim answered at 5:00. Zac MacVoy and Troy Schwab assisted on Sim's third goal of the season.

Pat Aubry tallied his third goal of the year to give LSSU a 2-1 lead at 6:13 of the first period. Dan Eves and Chad Nehring had assists. The Bulldogs tied it 2-2 at 13:31 on a goal by Mike Embach.

LSSU, which has been outscored in the second and third periods by an average of 2.6 to 1.4 goals per game this season, blanked the Bulldogs during the final two periods.

MacVoy tallied the game-winner at 1:36 of the second period during LSSU's first power play of the game. Will Acton and Simon Gysbers set up the play and drew assists. MacVoy, who has six goals this season, was also tripped in front of FSU's net while attempting to score later in the game and manufactured the team's best scoring chances of the night.
