After controlling the play through the first 30 minutes of the game, the Sault Steelers couldn't hold off the powerful Oakville Longhorns in the second half.

Surrendering four second half touchdowns and a safety, the Steelers fell 44-9 to the Longhorns in their Northern Football Conference home opener on Saturday night at Rocky DiPietro Field to even their record at 1-1.

Using the solid rushing game of veteran Toby Traveson, the Steelers controlled the ball and the clock in the opening two quarters while holding the Longhorns to just a pair of first downs offensively.

Oakville's Dave Dinnall scored his first of three touchdowns on an 80 yard punt return following the Steelers first possession before Traveson finally connected on a two yard run to even the score at 8-8 following a Tim Higgins two-point convert reception late in the first half.

With the Oakville offense sputtering, quarterback Tim Burke was replaced with Jeremy Mussche, which triggered the Longhorns into high gear.

Less than a minute after Traveson's score, Mussche hit Dinnall for a seven yard major to put the Longhorns ahead for good at 14-8.

Don Shane-Taylor, Mussche, Dinnall and Craig Davoren scored second half touchdowns for Oakville while Elvis Mullings recorded a safety off a bad punt snap. Andrew Posteraro added a Steelers single on a missed field goal attempt.
