St. Basil, SJD to meet for hockey city championship

The St. Basil Saints and Sir James Dunn Eagles have advanced to meet each other for the high school hockey league city championship.

The Saints and Eagles each scored wins in the third and deciding games in semi-final action on Sunday night at Memorial Gardens to win their respective series 2-1.

In the opening game, Steven Nelli scored the game winner with 1:25 remaining in regulation time to lift the Saints to a 2-1 win over the White Pines Wolverines.

Justin Wensley scored in the first period to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead before the Saints comeback began with Nathan Richichi's goal 1:30 into the third period.

In the second game, the Eagles soared past the St. Mary's Knights 4-1 as Tyler Robinson lead the winners with a two goal effort. Graeme Burt and Matt Irving also scored for the Eagles while Jordan Rochetta replied for the Knights.

The best-of-five city championship series begins on Wednesday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre at 7 p.m.
