SSMAC HAS STRONG SHOWING IN SUDBURY

The Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club launched its 2005-2006 competitive schedule at the North Eastern Ontario Regional (NEOR) Developmental Meet #1 over the weekend in Sudbury, producing pleasing results for Senior Coach Bill Park

Leading the SSMAC contingent in the Pre-Provincial Division was Sarah Theodossiou, 12, with four first-place finishes (in the 50-, 100-, 200-and 800-metre freestyle, and a third- place result in the 200-metre individual medley).

Brian Lee, 12, was also strong, placing first in the 200-metre breaststroke and the 800-metre freestyle. He also had four second-place finishes. Hannah Murray, 10, won the 100- and 200-metre freestyle as well as the 200-metre individual medley. She placed second in three other races.

Josh Lawrence,13, garnered top-three finishes in the 200-metre backstroke as well as the 200- and 800-metre freestyle.

Patrick Bonne, 12, was first in the 50-metre backstroke and finished in the top eight in another four races. Claire McCarthy, 10, was runner-up in the 100-metre freestyle and the 50-metre breaststroke, and finished in the top eight in four others races.

In Developmental Division action, Christopher Carlyle, 10, finished first in the 50-metre freestyle and the 100-metre backstroke, and took second in the 100-metre breaststroke. Steven Lee, 10, finished on top in the 100-metre breaststroke and the 100-metre individual medley. Lee also had one second-place finish, and two third place results.

Brendan Wilton, 10, won the 50-metre breaststroke, and had three other finishes in the top eight.

Kellie Geiling, 13, was strong with three second-place finishes (in the 50-metre breaststroke, 50-metre freestyle and the 100-metre backstroke).

Jack Carlyle, 12, collected four third-place finishes and placed in the top eight in another. Elyse McCarthy, 13, finished in front, in the 50- and 100-metre breaststroke, and had a third place standing in the 50-metre freestyle. Rayne Fisher, 11, garnered third place in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Swimmers Michael Lawrence, Amelia Marrato, Marissa Lobert and Kalen Critchley had multiple best time performances during the two-day meet, finishing several races within the top eight. Other exceptional team members were Anna Reich, Erinn Theodossiou, and Logan Naccarato.

In the relay events, the team of Jack Carlyle, Michael Lawrence, Steven Lee and Christopher Carlyle took first place in the 200-metre freestyle relay in the 11-12 age category.

The team of Carlyle, Brendan Wilton, Matteo Reich and Steven Lee placed second in the 10 and under, 200-metre freestyle relay. Lee, Lawrence and the two Carlyle brothers, captured first place in the 200-metre medley relay. Reich, Wilton, Lee and Christopher Carlyle combined to win the 200-metre medley relay.

Overall, Senior Coach Bill Park was delighted with the results of the weekend. “Numerous swimmers recorded personal bests and are giving us strong prospects for the future,” states Park. “This was the first competitive action for most swimmers this season, so it was a good warm up for upcoming meets.”

The next major competition for SSMAC is the locally hosted Joey Calzones Invitational, November 11-13, at the John Rhodes Community Pool.
