SSMAC Victorious at Calzone’s Meet Again

The Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club continued to dominate its home swim meet – the Joey Calzone’s Invitational – by winning both the A and B sides of competition over the weekend.

SSMAC has now won the A (pre-provincial) championship of the meet nine consecutive years. It has also captured top spot in the B (Developmental) segment of the event for three years straight.

Fourteen teams and nearly 270 swimmers from across the region and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula converged on the John Rhodes Community Pool for the three-day event.

The Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club was runner-up in both A and B side competition. North Bay was third in the A side while the Hearst entry place third on the B division.

Becky Day (girls’ 11-12 age range), Brian Lee (boys’ 11-12 age group) and Jeff Byrne (boys’ 15 and over) garnered the high point trophies in the A division for SSMAC.

Wendy Oleskiw, 14, Sarah Theodossiou, 12, and Hannah Murray, 10, each placed second overall in their respective age groups. Other pre-provincial highlights included Carrie-Lynne Smale, 10, and Steven Lee, 10, securing third-place standings in high point competition.

Jeff Park placed fourth overall, in the boys’ 15 and over age category, while Josh Lawrence finished fourth in the boys’ 13-14 group. Julia Turgeon, 12, placed fifth overall in the girls’ 11-12 age category.

In Developmental competition, Christopher Carlyle, 10, and Adam Mossa, 12, each won high point trophies in their age division, while Sara Mathews, (10 and under girls) and Chelsea Griswold (13-14 girls) each placed third overall. Jack Carlyle, 12, Claire McCarthy, 10, and Shane Rock, 10, recorded top-five showings in their respective age groups.

“We had excellent results on both sides of this meet,” says SMAC Senior Coach Bill Park “I was particularly pleased with how our novice swimmers fared against the competition within the region. They have been working very hard in the pool. Many swimmers produced best times, and the club, in general, is in a good position to compete at our next competitions.”

SSMAC is scheduled to have members participate at both the Soo “Y” Dolphins meet at the John Rhodes Community Pool and the Youth Cup in Toronto the first week of December.
