Soo Night Hawks go two and one in Escanaba and Gladstone

GLADSTONE, MICH – The Soo Night Hawks travelled to Escanaba Michigan on Saturday, June 17 for a double header against the Escanaba Junior Cubs. The Night Hawks were then scheduled to take on the Gladstone Junior Indians in a double header on Sunday, June 18. 

With a threatening weather forecast for Sunday, June 18, the decision was made to play one of the Gladstone games on Saturday night following the Escanaba double header, this resulted in the Night Hawks playing a double header of two seven inning games against Escanaba in the afternoon and a nine inning night game in Gladstone.  

In the opener in Escanaba the Night Hawks would score 3 in the second and 4 in the third to open a 7 to 0 lead enroute to a 12 to 3 victory.  Tyler Sayers would get the start and throw 5 strong innings allowing just one hit while striking out 7. 

The Night Hawks received several strong offensive performances with runs being scored by Sayers, Dylan Sewell, Stephen Bos, Noah Pearce, Noah O’Brien, Malcolm McPhee, Noah Thomson, and Jack McPhee. 

Driving in runs for the Night Hawks were Sayers, Braedon Whalen, O’Brien, Malcolm McPhee, and Jack McPhee.  Picking up hits in the victory were Sewell, Whalen, Bos, Pearce, O’Brien, and Thomson.

In the second game the Night Hawks would jump out to a quick 5 run first inning and a 7 to 2 lead after 2 innings enroute to an eventual 11 to 4 victory.  Dylan Sewell got the start for the Night Hawks pitching a strong 4 innings while striking out 9 batters. 

Offensively again the Night Hawks were strong with runs scored by Tyler Sayers, Sewell, Stephen Bos, Noah Pearce, Noah O’Brien, Brett Deschene, and Jack McPhee. 

Driving in runs in the victory was Sayers, Braedon Whalen, Bos, Pearce, and Malcolm McPhee.  Hits were picked up by Sayers, Sewell, Whalen, Bos, Pearce, and Malcolm McPhee.

Moving over to Gladstone to take on the Junior Indians in the third game of the day for the Night Hawks, the Night Hawks would surrender a 5 run third inning to fall behind 6 to 1 and would eventually fall to Gladstone in 9 innings by a score of 12 to 5. 

Offensively the Night Hawks got runs from Tyler Sayers, Dylan Sewell, Noah O’Brien, and Malcolm McPhee. Driving in runs were Sayers and Braedon Whalen.  Picking up hits were Sewell and Whalen.

The Night Hawks season record now stands at 11 wins 10 losses and 1 tie. Steve Hurley Head Coach of the Night Hawks stated “The coaching staff is happy with all the kids and how they played on Saturday. 

Playing three games (21 innings) in one day is a long day. We were a little shorthanded this past weekend and the weather didn't help. At the end of the day going 2-1 on the weekend is pretty good.”
