The Sir James Dunn Eagles senior girls volleyball team saw their run at the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) championships come to an end in the bronze medal game on Wednesday evening.
The Eagles, seeded sixth heading into the tournament, advanced into the playoffs by compiling a 3-1 record during the round robin.
Needing a win to advance in their final round robin game on Wednesday morning, the Eagles defeated Temiskaming in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-13.
The Eagles, the local city champions, opened the round robin on Tuesday with a 25-16, 25-20 win over Wingham's F.E. Madill before defeating St. Catherines' Govenor Simcoe 25-13, 25-20. The Eagles then lost their first game to third seeded Penetanguishene 25-18, 25-22.
In the quarterfinal match against Thunder Bay's Hillcrest, Sir James Dunn emerged with 25-20, 25-19 victory to advance into the semi-finals against Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) rival North Bay Chippewa.
The powerful Raiders downed the Eagles 29-27, 25-18 to advance to the OFSAA championship while sending Sir James Dunn to the bronze medal game.
In the medal games, the Eagles lost 25-19, 25-20 to fourth seeded Belle River while second seeded Chippewa was ousted by Scarborough's Francis Liebermann, the tournament's number one seed, in three sets.
Liebermann was presented with the gold medals while Chippewa claimed silver and Belle River bronze.
