Sharks defend provincial bantam basketball crown

The Sault Sharks Major Bantam Boys basketball team repeated as Provincial Champions in Division 7 of the Ontario Basketball Association playdowns in London this past weekend. The Sharks went undefeated with a 6-0 record.

In game one, the Sharks defeated the Centre Wellington Celtics 49-35. Top scorers were Matt Fabbro and Jeff Lloyd with eight points each.

In game two, the Sharks defeated the Strathroy Jammers 51-19 with Fabbro contributing 14 points and Lloyd scoring 10. Fabbro then scored 20 points and Devon Fortino added 10 to lead the Sharks to a 59-45 win in game three against the Lakeshore Lynxx.

In the quarterfinal game, the Sharks knocked off the Parry Sound Stingers 57-39 with Fabbro leading with 20 points and Matt Thibeault adding 10.

In the semi-final game, the Sharks trailed 20-2 after the first quarter but stormed back to take the lead in the third quarter and ended up defeating the Caledon Cougars 42-41 on a last second free throw by Lloyd. Top scorers were Lloyd with 13 points and Thibeault with nine.

In the gold medal game, the Sharks captured the title by defeating the Peterborough Power #2 63-35, with all the boys scoring in the championship game. Fabbro drained 12 points and Fortino 11.

Fabbro was named the Basketball Ontario MVP for the tournament.
