Sharks capture another gold at provincial tourney

The Sault Sharks Major Midget Boys Basketball team won a gold medal on the weekend, winning Division Six of Basketball Ontario's playdowns in Ottawa. In game 1, the Sharks defeated Kingston Running Rebels #2 by a score of 52-48.

The Sault Sharks Major Midget Boys Basketball team won a gold medal on the weekend, winning Division Six of Basketball Ontario's playdowns in Ottawa.

In game 1, the Sharks defeated Kingston Running Rebels #2 by a score of 52-48. High scorers for the Sharks were Matt Glibota with 24 points and Devon Fortino with 9.

In game 2, the Sharks suffered their only defeat at the hands of the Centre Wellington Celtics by a score of 49-36. Matt Glibota led the scoring with 13 points and Devon Fortino had 9.

In game 3, the Sharks slid past Kanata #2, 62-61. Again Glibota lead the Sharks with 23 points and Fortino chipped in with 10.

In game 4, the Sharks ran past the Mississauga Mustangs 65-47. Glibota lead the sharks with 19 points and Matt Thibeault scored 7.

In the semi-final, the Sharks faced a tough Malton Maverick team. Stellar defense in the second half led to a 72-64 victory. Leading the Sharks were Glibota with 23 points and Fortino with 21.

In the Divsion 6 final, the Sharks faced the London Orioin #2 team. The Sharks built a 24 to 15 half time lead and cruised to a 49-36 victory. Leading the Sharks to the victory were Glibota with 20 points, Fortino with 16 points and Thibeault with 10.

Glibota also won the Olympia Sports Camp MVP Award.

What made the victory even more amazing was the fact that the Sharks had 9 boys under 15 and moved up to and competed with older boys in the under 16 division.

This is the third year in a row that the Sault Sharks boys team has returned home with a gold medal in the Basketball Ontario playdowns.
